Hacking the Hack

There's this interesting thing happening around this game. It seems like everyone who's excited about it wants to change it. Certainly it's not the first time this has happened to a game. But it is a first for me.

On the one hand it's a little dissapointing. I'd be happier if everyone were excited about it the way I wrote it. But, when it comes right down to it, I can take it for the compliment that it is. When I think about the hack-hacking in the right light, it makes me smile. It almost certainly means that I've done something right with this design.

Unfortunately, I can't help with those hack-hacks. I have to keep myself seperated from them so I can finish my version of the game. Getting mixed up in thinking about converting it over to a western, or pulp, or some other flavor of fantasy would only cause me to loose track of what needs work in the heart of the game.

I think the further I move away from the PDF, the less unique the tone of the game becomes, so while I can see the appeal in writing conversions(I think it's natural for people to test the boundaries of a rules-light game), RBH is at it's most potent as written by you - and I think you're wise to concentrate on honing that vision, because that's whats drawing people to the game by making it special.

I think the game is great as is. We've had a lot of fun over the last couple of weeks playtesting RBH2. It's definitely the best homebrew game I've seen in years.

We're using old D&D modules at the moment (Palace of the Silver Princess, Keep on the Borderlands, etc.). Works great!

We've experimented with some anime type characters (i.e. catgirl made with equal parts Fox and Longrunner), but that works fine too.

Keep up the good work!

Best regards,
TZ

Hacking the Hack = Tribute to Eric's ability to make something interesting for us OCD (yeah, you know me!) system tweakers out there.

I think you know what you're doing, and I think what you're doing is cool. Good luck with it!
